The UCA Discussion Paper for Presbyteries and Congregations on relationships between Christians and Jews. The Synod of Victoria and Tasmania Working Group on Christian-Jewish Relations has been authorized by the Assembly Working Group on Relations with Other Faiths to write a Discussion Paper for Presbyteries and Congregations on relations between Christians and Jews for distribution throughout the Uniting Church. The Discussion Paper follows the 'Statement inviting the Uniting Church to dialogue with the Jewish Community' which was adopted by the Eighth Assembly, July 1997. This statement was not 'public', but directed only to members of the Uniting Church as a means of raising the issues of Christian treatment of Jews throughout church history, and the need seriously to rethink this relationship. The UCA is now to join dozens of other mainstream churches around the world in issuing a public statement regarding its relationship with Jews and Judaism. The responses to the Discussion Paper are very important, as the Synod Working Group will take them into account when writing the public statement, which will then be submitted for approval to the 2006 Assembly.
