Co-operation needed to address disability needs 7th June 2002 From: UnitingCare Australia UnitingCare Australia today urged all tiers of Australian government to stop the rhetoric and work together to develop a strategy to effectively address unmet needs in disability services. The National Director of UnitingCare Australia, Lin Hatfield Dodds said,Governments must cooperate urgently to negotiate a new Commonwealth- State-Territory Disability Agreement. UnitingCare Australias National Disability Advisory Committee met in Adelaide on 6-7 June, and expressed extreme concern at some of the consequences of the Commonwealth Governments proposed changes to the Disability Support Pension. Committee Chair, Rev Richard Miller said,While UnitingCare Australia supports measures to provide encouragement for people with disabilities to participate in society and the economy, this must not be done in ways that create further disadvantage. Ms Hatfield Dodds said, UnitingCare Australia, as the largest nongovernment provider of community services in Australia, is willing to work with all stakeholders to help ensure that outcomes achieved do not work against people with disabilities.
