Meditative Mavor in the media

By Ruth Sandiford Phelan, Tuesday

Thursday, July 10

Cold, dark, early. 4.45am. The President, Rev John Mavor, his chaplain Rev Ken Anderson and I are ushered into a chauffeur driven vehicle to be taken to the studios of Channel 9 in Perth. ("Bishop treatment!", says John.)

John is quiet during the journey. Ken and I offer advice. Meditative Mavor absorbs all and says little. We arrive at the television studio which appears deserted, apart from a security guard, our driver, and our photographer, Jurgen Lunsmann.

John takes off his jacket to reveal his blue shirt, dog collar and wooden cross with the shape of a dove cut into it.

Makeup artist Linda Casey arrives, escorts us to her work area and then carries out an efficient job.

Minutes pass — John is in deep thought. The interviewer Steve Liebmann, chats with John off air. Our leader can't see him, only look down the camera and hear through his headphone.

5.45am. The interview. John ("with my mind spinning like a top," he said later) gives thoughtful, accurate, astute answers. Just a few short minutes later it is over. The interview went live to air in the eastern states, and was played in the west two hours later.
