Violence against Jews in NSW STATEMENT BY THE COUNCIL OF CHRISTIANS AND JEWS NSW INC ON ISSUES RELATING TO THE CURRENT VIOLENCE AND ANIMOSITY TARGETED AT THE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES The Council of Christians and Jews of NSW which exists to develop dialogue and under- standing between adherents of all faiths, deplores the sudden upsurge of incidents whereby ordinary Australian citizens are being threatened, their places of worship attacked and their children endangered. Such outbursts of hatred and abuse which have been witnessed in the past few weeks, spilling over from events in the Middle East, are incompatible with the Australian way. In Australia we have always known differing viewpoints which have traditionally been discussed, defended and debated. This is our way - not the throwing of rocks and stones at innocent people; not the desecration of places of worship; not firebombs and molotov cocktails. The Council believes the time has come for all religious leaders to insist that the intimidation and violence evidenced in recent weeks must not be allowed, accepted or tolerated in Australian society. It calls for the rejection of all manifestations of hatred and the respectful discussion of differences without denigration, condemnation or incitement to violence directed at any individual citizen or segment of society.
