Sewing for Assembly 2000 The business committee for Assembly 2000 has put out a call to artists and would-be-artists of all ages. It wants "as many contributions as possible to the hem of God’s garment". Minutes secretary. Dr Marelle Harisun, said the appeal is based on Isaiah 6:1: "The hem of God’s garment filled the temple." "Prince Alfred College Adelaide will be the central meeting place for the Uniting Chuch Assembly 2000," she said. "The main meeting hall will be enlivened with colour and movement to remind us that we meet in God’s presence and our business is God’s business. "All members are part of our decision-making in the Uniting Church. It is not practical for everyone to be physically present but you can all be there in spirit and represented by your donation to the decorations of the college hall. "You are invited to send us a donation of fabric to form a representation of the hem of God’s garment. We will then organise for all the pieces to be sewn together in a kaleidoscope of colour, hung around the hall. Pieces of the ‘hem of God’s garment’ will then be given to each synod, congress and assembly to take back and display appropriately at events." Here are the details of what the committee is asking: Fabric: Light weight, crease resistant fabric with movement, such as natural silk or nylon or synthetic with a silken appearance. Size: 45 X 30 cms, finished with a narrow hem all around. One metre of fabric would make six or more blocks, depending on width. Colour: You can choose any shade of the specified colour, from pale to dark. Each state has been given a colour. Northern is red, Western Australia orange, Queensland yellow, Tasmania green, New South Wales blue, South Australia indigo (inky bluish purple), Victoria violet, the congress if black and the assembly is white. Design: A design on the theme of the assembly can be printed onto the fabric. Marelle added: "This can be done by dyeing, marbling, tie-dyeing, silk painting or drawing in fabric paint, screen printing, block printing and so on. Please don’t embroider or appliqué as this adds weight to the fabric, and we need it as light as possible. The overall major colour of your state or group should be dominant." Number: You can send as many pieces of fabric as you please. "At least one for every congregation would be terrific," she said. "We need a lot of pieces to ‘fill the temple’! Delivery: The committee is inviting presbyteries to display work from their congregations at their May and June meetings before sending one parcel to Adelaide in mid-June. Post to Rev V Waller, SACC, GPO Box 2106, Adelaide 5001.
