About

The Disaster Relief Fund of the Uniting Church in Australia was established by the Assembly of the Uniting Church so that the church as a whole could provide assistance in disaster situations within Australia in order to assist in the recovery of individuals and communities.

The Fund is administered by a group of Trustees appointed by the Assembly Standing Committee. The fund encourages each synod of the Uniting Church in Australia to appoint a Synod Disaster Coordinator, an officer responsible for disaster recovery response. The role of these synod officers is to:

  1. arrange liaison with presbyteries and other relevant church and community groups within the synod
  2. arrange training programs so that there are competent people to respond in disaster situations
  3. establish links with the State Disaster Response and Recovery Authorities

The Trustees have developed Guidelines which outline the role of the Uniting Church in disaster situations, the basis upon which the disaster response of the Uniting Church is made and the principles for the distribution of disaster relief funds.

The Administration Services Manager of the National Assembly Secretariat, Jenny Bertalan, is Secretary of the Trust and he may be contacted on 02 8267 4229 or email Jenny (mailto:assysec@nat.uca.org.au)

Background: Terrorism moved closer to home on Saturday, October 12th, 2002, when a bomb destroyed two crowded clubs in Bali.

It was 11.00pm (local time) when the bombs went off in the tourist area of Kuta Beach. The force shattered shop windows and was reportedly felt for a kilometre.

As of Thursday morning, October 17th, over 180 people, including 30 Australians, had been reported dead. A further 100 Australians had been injured and about 160 were still unaccounted for, with fears that the total Australian death toll could reach 119.
