Disaster Relief Fund About the Fund | The National Guidelines | Links | Trustees list | Synod Disaster Coordinators NEW - Also - letter posted January 20th 2003 by NSW/Assembly regarding the Canberra bush fires The Disaster Relief Fund of the Uniting Church in Australia was established by the Assembly of the Uniting Church so that the church as a whole could provide assistance in disaster situations within Australia in order to assist in the recovery of individuals and communities.
The Fund is administered by a group of Trustees appointed by the Assembly Standing Committee. The fund encourages each synod of the Uniting Church in Australia to appoint a Synod Disaster Coordinator, an officer responsible for disaster recovery response. The role of these synod officers is to:
The Trustees have developed Guidelines which outline the role of the Uniting Church in disaster situations, the basis upon which the disaster response of the Uniting Church is made and the principles for the distribution of disaster relief funds. Background: Terrorism moved closer to home on Saturday, October 12th, 2002, when a bomb destroyed two crowded clubs in Bali. It was 11.00pm (local time) when the bombs went off in the tourist area of Kuta Beach. The force shattered shop windows and was reportedly felt for a kilometre. As of Thursday morning, October 17th, over 180 people,
including 30 Australians, had been reported dead. A further 100 Australians
had been injured and about 160 were still unaccounted for, with fears
that the total Australian death toll could reach 119.
