NOTES ON
THE
REVISED COMMON LECTIONARY.
Links below will take you to
outlines of Services
1. Epiphany 6 to 9. If Easter is very early, eg, 23 March, AD 2008, the lectionary will use fewer "After Epiphany'. The `Transfiguration of Jesus' will always be the last set of lessons in this period. As Easter moves to a later date, eg, 24 April, AD 201l, so the number of Sundays "after Epiphany " will increase to a maximum of nine weeks.
2.
Epiphany is 6 January. It may be celebrated on the following Sunday
unless
that Sunday in the Baptism of Jesus, then used the Sunday before..
3. Ash Wednesday - Background notes and an outline for Ash Wednesday.
4.
Palm
/ Passion Sunday: This Sunday
you have a choice between celebrating either Palm or Passion
Sunday. In the “Handbook of the Christian Year" by Hickman,
Sailers, Stookey & White, Abingdon Press there is a service outline to show
how to integrate these two themes together, commencing with the Procession of
the Palms, proclaiming the Entrance to Jerusalem and then proclaiming the Passion
Story. In this service the readings proclaim the message. If a homily/sermon
is included, it should be brief.
5.
Easter
Vigil. Held on Easter Saturday
after sundown. See Readings in the lectionary. For
details on the Order of Worship for the Easter Vigil, see below or the ‘Handbook
of the Christian Year’ (Abingdon Press)
or Resources produced by the Commission called “The Great Ninety Days”.
6.
Ascension readings may
replace the reading for Easter 7; and
7. All Saints’
[Nov 1] readings may be used on the first Sunday in November
replacing the reading for
that day.
